Contemporary dance | Yin yoga | Capoeira | Surf
Cherise Richards operated as the Choreographer/Director of Riptide Dance– A company whose movement aesthetic fuses Contemporary Dance with the Brazilian martial art Capoeira. Riptide performed in the theater, site specific spaces and in dance films. The ocean is a reoccurring theme in most of the companies work as a result of Cherise’s love of water and surfing.
Cherise’s mentors are Suzee and Paul Grilley who fostered her education in Dance, Capoeira and Yin Yoga from a young age as well as her Capoeira Mestre, Mestre Amen Santo of Capoeira Batuque. She has a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Dance from the University of California, Santa Barbara, a Master of Fine Arts in Choreography from California Institute of the Arts and is a Yoga Alliance certified Yin Yoga teacher. She is also a surf instructor for Surf with Amigas, a company that offers surf retreats in Central America.
Cherise has danced nationally and internationally with NugentDance, Project Bandaloop and MotionLab and understudied with LevyDance. She has taught Dance, Capoeira, Yin Yoga and Pilates at such institutions as Loyola Marymount University, Calarts, ACDFA, Exhale Venice, Pasadena Dance Theatre, Your Neighborhood Studio, The Dance Space, Studio Z andOakwood School. In 2006 she won the Corwin Award for Choreography for her piece, Inward Pilgrimage and was nominated for a Lester Horton Award for Performance for her work in the piece Broken/UnBroken by Stephanie Nugent.
She now lives primarily in Central America working as a surf instructor and yoga teacher for the women's surf/yoga retreat company, Surf with Amigas.
